These spicy and assertive spirits fueled the whiskey culture of New Orleans and established the first American cocktail, The Sazerac. Part interactive museum, part brand showroom, part micro distillery, part event space, Sazerac House is the creation of the Sazerac Co., the giant distilling and liquor company owned by local businessman Bill Goldring. Sazerac House is now slated to open to the public on Oct. 2, at the corner of Magazine and Canal streets. As the final pieces of this intricately wrought new development are moved into place, a media preview tour showed off its many gleaming new features. But it sure is a wine drinking one, between its culinary culture and social scene.

It starts like an Old Fashioned, at least the traditional kind made without the relatively recent addition of mashed up fruit.

In 1933, when liquor returned legally to America (word is New Orleans was never all that dry), the city took up drinking Sazeracs again. The simplest story is that at a bar in New Orleans called the Sazerac House, opened in 1852 in the French Quarter, the drink was the house specialty, although using brandy instead of rye. To be precise, they used Sazerac de Forge et Fils, a brandy so celebrated, the bar itself adopted its name.

Designating their many saloons as “coffee houses” was a charming New Orleans tradition that kept the city’s streets looking a bit more upstanding. The best-known of these was The Sazerac Coffee House, owned by Thomas H. Handy and Antoine Peychaud Jr. during its heyday from 1870 to 1889. Together, the two created what’s known as America’s first cocktail – aptly named the Sazerac. Although it originally mixed Peychaud’s secret family recipe for bitters with brandy as the main spirit, in 1873 Handy made the switch from brandy to the spicier rye whiskey. So we’re heading to the corner of Magazine and Canal, where The Sazerac House just opened in October of 2019.

But Kevin Richards, the company’s marketing manager, said Sazerac House was conceived to offer more than a factory tour and gift shop. Ghislain de Beaucé, the current owner of the family’s estate, first tasted the cocktail on a trip to New Orleans 25 years ago, when he was a banker in New York. Ask him what he thought of his first sip, and Beaucé makes it clear which version of the cocktail’s history he accepts.

Named after the New Orleans bartender who first used rye whiskey in the Sazerac Cocktail, this uncut and unfiltered Straight Rye Whiskey is bottled directly from the barrel, just as it was over a century ago. Full of rich flavors, this authentic American rye whiskey is a symbol of the timeless history of New Orleans and the legacy of Thomas H. Handy.
